Interior Design

It’s exciting when you get a new home to have a wide-open palette to create and make the space your own. However, there are many homeowners who find themselves either frozen in the decision-making process or frustrated by money spent that doesn’t achieve their desired results. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make in home decoration and interior design.

1. Being afraid to use color

Many people are simply afraid to use color in their interior design. While it’s true that some combinations of color or shades can be overwhelming, endless possibilities that are aesthetically pleasing and also create a sense of warmth and artistic expression.

If you’re not quite ready to commit to a wall color, consider using color in the form of accents, art, fabric or furnishings. This may be one of the easiest ways to begin to incorporate color into your home without feeling overwhelmed.

While there are benefits to being able to create a specific look with neutral colors, if this is the only thing on which you base your decorating style you might find yourself bored.

2. Forgetting to consider lighting

Can you imagine if you have the most beautiful space created, and then you find you can only enjoy it during the day? Or perhaps it’s a beautiful space with beautiful lighting during the day but it could be so much better because you spend all your time in this space at night. Lighting plays an integral role in successful interior design, and not just what style of lighting, but also where to place fixtures for best effect. Lighting is vital for creating mood, and should be carefully considered when decorating.

Another common mistake in home design is forgetting lighting in walk-in closets or storage spaces. This can be very deceiving because people will underestimate how much natural light is needed for these areas due to their limited use. If you don’t have windows installed in these areas, there must be lighting within easy access.

3. Forgetting to capitalize on outdoor views and natural light

Natural light and outdoor views should be considered when planning interior design. Many people don’t realize that they can actually bring the outdoors in by incorporating large windows and glass doors, as well as utilizing space on patios and balconies.

If you have a beautiful view, make sure to showcase it! This can be done with large windows or even a wall of glass that opens to the beauty outside.

As an added bonus, this natural light will help to reduce energy costs in the home!

4. Incorrectly hanging art

You find the most captivating artwork, and maybe it’s something you intend to be the focal point of a room, however, it can be a big mistake to hang it too high or too low. It’s important to know the “rules” of art hanging so that your work will receive its full impact and also speak with your interior design theme. Art should be hung at eye level for the average person.

Another common mistake is to hang art too close to other objects. This will minimize the impact of both the art and the object it’s near.

In addition, carefully consider how best to display items such as photographs, diplomas or certificates. These can easily be turned into a gallery wall by using the correct hanging technique, while when placed improperly, be a source of clutter.

5. Not having a plan

It’s so easy to lose a sense of scale when entering large furniture showrooms or browsing the internet for home furnishings. Without a plan, it’s easy to purchase items that don’t work well together or are too large or small for the intended space. This can be very costly in both time and money, as returning or exchanging furniture can often be difficult and frustrating.

There is so much to consider when executing an interior design plan properly, from color theory, to architectural styles, to furniture types, etc. If you feel a project is outside of your expertise, consider hiring an interior designer for assistance.

A professional interior designer will be able to work within any budget constraints you may have in order to make your house feel like a home while still meeting all needs and desires for what your space could be.
