During the COVID-19 pandemic our homes were forced to perform duties which we never intended. Your home office became your mission command center, you may have squeezed a gym in, or both. One thing many people skipped was converting a section of their home into a retreat. It’s time to give back to yourself and create a room that feels more like a resort. Because we all need a little extra rest and relaxation where we spend most of our time, here are 5 ways to create a living room that feels more like a vacation destination:

1. Dream Big and Bold

Have you ever noticed that the best BNBs and resorts don’t shy away from making a statement with their decor? They bank on the idea that guests will say, “Wow! I wish I could do that in my home.” Yet these grand colors, art pieces, murals, and light fixtures may seem like they’re too extravagant for a home. Well, let me be the first to say: they’re not.

Going bold is all about moderation, especially in a moderately-sized space. Choose one wall for a six-foot by eight-foot painting or a bold color you’ve always wished you have in your home.

As for an exaggerated light fixture, go for it! Light fixtures are one of the easiest decor items to change out.

2. Show Off Your Travels

All it takes is a few of your favorite keepsakes from your adventures to bring you back to some of your favorite memories. So, don’t keep those treasures locked away in the attic. Show them off! Create a gallery wall complete with floating shelves. If you have more mementos that your living room can handle, cycle them over the course of the year.

One easy way to capture adventures without investing in a trip overseas is through throw pillows and blankets.

3. Invest in One-of-a-Kind Furniture Pieces

Unique furniture pieces can transport you to a far away place. You don’t have to replace all of your furniture at once, slowly integrate chairs, tables, and other pieces that catch your eye and tug at your imagination. Keep in mind that when you keep the majority of your furniture and finishings neutral, your best pieces will stand out.

4. Reduce the Clutter

Clearing out excess clutter is a sure way to declutter your mind. One of the reasons people find resorts so relaxing is their spaces offer purity and unity through pared back decor. Only fill your living room with items you truly love. Everything else can go back into the attic where your keepsakes came from.

5. Rearrange Your Furniture for a More Open Feeling

Our living rooms are some of the hardest working rooms in the home. This can lead to furniture arrangements that center on the television, laptop, or other distractions. Spacing out seating and creating more walking space can give your room a more relaxed and luxurious aesthetic.

Take a step back and analyze what your furniture is doing for you. If you’re unsure how you can rearrange the room, just dive in and start moving things. A new layout can give you a fresh perspective on the potential of the space.

As you pull and push furniture into new positions, be sure to keep bulky pieces from in front of the windows. Your new vacation location should be bursting with light.
